Course Outcome
On successful completion, Maxwell Training issues students with a Statement of Attainment recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework for the following units of competency:
- MSMWHS216 Operate Breathing Apparatus
- MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres
Description
This course covers the competencies associated with the operation and maintenance of breathing apparatus equipment in a irrespirable atmosphere and testing the working atmosphere to determine if it is safe for the proposed work. Testing involves the use of electronic test apparatus.
Demonstrating Competency
- Conduct pre-donning checks and tests on breathing apparatus
- Inspect breathing apparatus for immediate use in accordance with procedures and report and record faulty or damaged equipment in accordance with procedures.
- Operation of breathing apparatus including identify, monitor and control hazards and establish and maintain communication with appropriate personnel
- Demonstrate effective application of breathing apparatus
- Close down breathing apparatus set in accordance with procedures
- Remove breathing apparatus set and undertake after-use cleaning and maintenance to ensure the equipment is ready for operational use
- Determine type of gas/atmosphere to be tested
- Select and calibrate equipment
- Identify hazards and implement control measures
- Interpret, report and monitor gas on an ongoing basis and take required action
- Maintenance of equipment
Duration
Course duration is one day (approximately 8 hours).

Entry Requirements
- Students are required to have the physical ability to successfully complete the practical aspects of breathing apparatus and gas test atmospheres and associated tasks.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy
Language, literacy and numeracy skills are required at a level to read, complete, interpret and communicate workplace documents and procedures and perform basic calculations
Delivery Method
- Theory – classroom based, including PowerPoint presentations, trainer demonstrations and group discussions
- Practical – using safety equipment in multiple simulated work activities
Assessment Process
- Multiple choice and short answer written assessment
- Targeted questioning
- Observation of practical skills during simulated work activities
Student Must Provide
- Lunch (Maxwell Training provide coffee, tea, water and biscuits only)
- Appropriate clothing including enclosed footwear
- Note: all course resource materials are provided
