Confined Space Entry Training

This nationally recognised course will equip you with the skills and knowledge to safely enter, work in, and exit confined spaces while controlling hazards, following permits, and complying with WHS legislation. Through hands-on training, you will complete realistic entry scenarios using gas detectors, permits, harnesses, retrieval systems, and emergency procedures. This course is essential for anyone required to work in or around confined spaces.

Accredited Units of Competency

On successful completion your will receive a Statement of Attainment or the following nationally recognised units:

  • RIIWHS202E Enter and work in confined spaces

  • RIIRIS201E Conduct local risk control

  • MSMWHS201 Conduct hazard analysis

  • MSMPER200 Work in accordance with an issued permit

What You’ll Learn

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify confined space hazards, assess risks and apply control measures

  • Conduct risk assessments and hazard analysis using workplace documentation (SWMS, Take 5, Risk Matrix)

  • Follow entry permits, sign-on procedures, and communicate with a standby person

  • Monitor atmospheres using gas detection equipment

  • Safely enter confined spaces

  • Use PPE, harnesses, retrieval systems, signs, and barricades correctly

  • Follow emergency procedures in the event of changing conditions or incidents

How the Training Works

Training Delivery

  • Delivered in person by a qualified trainer at one of Maxwell Training’s purpose-built simulators or an approved training facility

  • The total course duration includes theory, practical activities and assessments

  • Learn through interactive presentations, trainer demonstrations, and realistic hands-on practical activities in simulated confined spaces

Practical Activities

  • Conducting a pre-start briefing and risk assessment (SWMS / Take 5)

  • Inspecting and wearing PPE including full-body harness and respirators

  • Completing and signing onto a Confined Space Entry Permit

  • Setting up signage, barricades, and isolation controls

  • Practical demonstration of two confined space entry simulated scenarios

  • Gas testing for oxygen levels, LEL, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulphide

  • Communicating with the standby person and responding to changes in atmospheric conditions

  • Simulated evacuation procedures

Assessment

  • Knowledge assessment (multiple choice and short answer)

  • Completion of a Portfolio of Evidence including workplace documents such as a Take 5s, Risk Assessments, sign off on Confined Space Entry Permits, Entry and Exit Registers, Bump Tests, Harness Inspection Checklists and an End of Day Report

Entry Requirements

To fully participate and stay safe during practical activities, you must meet the following requirements:

General Requirements

  • Proof of identity must be supplied and verified on the day of training

  • Minimum age of 14 years

  • Students under 18 years must provide parental consent (unless linked to an employer)

  • You need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) — apply free at www.usi.gov.au

Language, Literacy, Numeracy & Digital (LLND)

  • Read and complete knowledge questions (basic Year 10 level literacy)

  • Read and interpret permits, risk assessments and safety signs

  • Complete written documentation such as Take 5s, basic checklists and reports

  • Follow verbal and written instructions from the trainer/standby personnel

  • Use a digital device (tablet, smartphone, or laptop) for assessments 

Physical Requirements

  • Be physically able to enter and move in a confined space

  • Climb ladders and maintain 3-points-of-contact

  • Wear a full-body harness, including being suspended if required

  • Perform basic manual handling
