Chief and Warden Training (incl. Confine Small Emergencies)

This nationally recognised course gives you the confidence and skills to safely identify, assess, and respond to small workplace fires using first attack firefighting equipment such as fire extinguishers, fire blankets, and hose reels.
Delivered through realistic, hands-on simulations, this training helps you understand fire behaviour, select the right equipment, and apply safe firefighting techniques without putting yourself or others at risk.
Whether you’re on a construction site, in an office, warehouse, or industrial facility, this course equips you to take immediate action during the critical first moments of a fire – protecting lives, property, and business continuity.

How the Training Works

Training Delivery

  • Delivered in person by a qualified trainer at one of Maxwell Training’s purpose-built simulators or an approved training facility
  • The total course duration includes practical activities and assessments
  • Training combines classroom learning, group discussion, and live, controlled fire simulations using specialist training equipment

Practical Activities

  • Identifying fire classes and selecting the correct extinguisher
  • Demonstrating the PASS method on simulated Class A and Class F fires
  • Using a fire blanket to safely smother a contained fire
  • Operating a fire hose reel, controlling nozzle pressure, and extinguishing a small simulated fire
  • Participating in a realistic emergency scenario using BullEx fire simulation technology
  • Conducting post-fire inspections and safe equipment shutdown procedures

Assessment

  • Knowledge assessment (multiple choice and short answer)
  • Practical demonstration using fire extinguishers, blankets, and hose reels
  • Observation of correct extinguisher selection, technique, and equipment safety

Entry Requirements

To fully participate and stay safe during practical activities, you must meet the following requirements:

General Requirements

  • Proof of identity must be supplied and verified on the day of training
  • Minimum age of 14 years
  • Students under 18 years must provide parental consent (unless linked to an employer)
  • You need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) — apply free at www.usi.gov.au

Language, Literacy, Numeracy & Digital (LLND)

  • Read and complete knowledge questions (basic Year 10 level literacy)
  • Read and interpret safety signs and fire extinguisher labels
  • Complete short written knowledge questions
  • Follow verbal instructions from the trainer during simulations
  • Use a digital device (tablet, smartphone, or laptop) for assessments

Physical Requirements

  • Be able to stand, move safely, and operate portable fire equipment
  • Basic physical fitness is required to navigate stairs and move to and from assembly points
