This practical course equips you with the skills to operate as part of an Emergency Control Organisation (ECO), including key leadership roles such as Warden and Chief Warden. Learn how to lead evacuations, manage emergency procedures, coordinate with emergency services, and safely confine small emergencies—like minor fires or spills—before they escalate. This course is appropriate for people requiring the skills to perform the duties of a Warden & Chief Warden in the workplace.
Note: For most of our coursework, students will be provided iPads to complete assessments and forms.

This course equips you with the skills and knowledge needed to operate effectively as part of an Emergency Control Organisation (ECO), including key leadership roles such as Warden and Chief Warden. You’ll learn how to manage emergencies, lead evacuations, coordinate with emergency services, and safely confine small emergencies like minor fires and spills—before they escalate.

- Understand the structure, responsibilities and procedures of an Emergency Control Organisation (ECO)
- Prepare for emergencies through planning and risk awareness
- Respond to alarms, initiate evacuations and manage communication systems
- Confine small incidents (e.g. fires, chemical spills) using the correct emergency equipment
- Lead and coordinate ECO team actions and make safe, timely decisions
- Work effectively with emergency services and communicate clearly under pressure
- Complete debriefs, reports, and assist with post-incident reviews
This training is ideal for:
- Staff assigned to ECO roles (Wardens, Deputy Wardens, Chief Wardens)
- Anyone responsible for emergency procedures in facilities, offices, schools, hospitals, industrial sites, or public venues
- Those looking to build confidence and competence in emergency leadership and first response
Training Delivery:
Our trainers create a relaxed, interactive classroom environment using:
- PowerPoint presentations and videos
- Real-world emergency scenarios and case studies
- Group discussions and teamwork exercises
- Using communication systems like PA speakers or radios
- Confidently leading or assisting with evacuations
- Performing area sweeps and accountability checks
- Confine a minor incident using appropriate first attack equipment
- Coordinating mock emergencies with role-played “emergency services”
You’ll complete a mix of:
- Short answer questions, checklists and forms
- Group-based problem solving
- Realistic, hands-on emergency drills
Entry Requirements
To fully participate and stay safe during practical activities, students should meet the following:
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to physically assist with evacuations
- Use emergency equipment (fire extinguisher, spill kit, radio)
- Wear PPE (e.g. hi-vis vest, helmet)
- Reading and writing at approximately Year 10 level
- Read and follow emergency plans and signage
- Complete checklists and simple reports
- Communicate clearly with team members and responders
- Use a digital device (tablet/smartphone/laptop) for assessments
