Description
This course covers the entering and working in confined spaces in resources and infrastructure industries. It includes planning and preparing for entry of confined spaces, entry and working in confined spaces, exiting confined spaces and cleaning up, gas monitoring and the issuing of permits.
This course is appropriate for operators undertaking work in confined spaces, being used as a safety observer where a permit requires for this role to be present and needs to determine if the working atmosphere is safe for the proposed work. Also for personnel who may be required to issue any and all permits.
Demonstrating Competency
- Obtain appropriate entry permit and instructions for performing work in confined space
- Interpreting and applying safe work method statements
- Apply tagging and lock out
- Selecting, wearing and caring for personal protective equipment applicable to all tasks and environment identified
- Entering the confined space
- Using atmospheric monitoring devices prior to entering the confined space
- Working in the confined space
- Using atmospheric monitoring devices during confined space activity
- Applying safe materials handling methods
- Exiting the confined space
- Remove tagging and lock out
- Understanding the permit system and the individual permit's requirements
- Observing work being performed
- Noting any change in conditions and taking required action.
- Reviewing the conditions under which the work will be undertaken
- Examining the site to determining the hazards and safety requirements applicable to the site
- Ensuring the appropriate permit(s) is (are) selected depending on the organisations procedures
- Determining the appropriate conditions for the permit(s)
- Raising, authorising and issuing the necessary permit(s)
- Monitoring compliance with the permit conditions
- Reporting any indiscretions or violations of permit conditions and where necessary revoking permits
- Managing the permit process especially in shift hand overs or extensions to work activities
- Withdrawing and signing off work permits on completion of the work and verification that the requirements of the permit have been complied with.
- Apply personal safety principles
- Interpret atmospheric conditions using atmospheric monitoring equipment
- Recommend appropriate action
- Maintain monitoring equipment
Course duration is two days (approximately 8 hours each day). Start time is 7.30am – finish time is 3.30pm

Entry Requirements
Students are required to have the physical ability to successfully complete the practical aspects of entering and working in confined spaces and associated tasks. These may include, but are not limited to climbing ladders whilst maintaining three points of contact, donning and wearing a full body harness and being suspended in full body harness, entering and working in a confined space and manual handling
Language, Literacy and Numeracy
- Language, literacy and numeracy skills are required at a level to read, complete, interpret and communicate workplace documents and procedures and perform basic calculations
- Students are required to pass an LLN assessment
- Theory: classroom based, including PowerPoint presentations, trainer demonstrations and group discussions
- Practical: using safety equipment in multiple simulated work activities
Assessment Process
- Multiple choice and short answer written assessment
- Targeted questioning
- Observation of practical skills during simulated work activities
- Lunch
- It is recommended that students wear the following PPE supplied by themselves: hard hats, long clothing(jeans acceptable), steel cap boots, and gloves.
