This nationally recognised course teaches you how to safely test and monitor potentially hazardous atmospheres using gas detection equipment—ensuring a safe, compliant work environment in confined or enclosed spaces.

Gas Test Atmospheres

This nationally recognised course provides the essential skills and knowledge to conduct atmospheric testing safely in environments where hazardous gases or vapours may be present. You’ll learn how to use gas detection equipment, interpret readings, and apply control measures to maintain a safe atmosphere before and during work activities.

Through hands-on, practical training, you’ll gain confidence to test confined spaces, enclosed areas, and other hazardous work environments — ensuring compliance with workplace safety procedures and WHS legislation.

Accredited Unit of Competency

On successful completion, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for:

  • MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres

What You’ll Learn

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify hazardous gases, oxygen levels, and potential atmospheric risks

  • Safely use gas detectors to test and monitor workplace air quality

  • Calibrate, zero, and bump test gas detection equipment

  • Record and interpret atmospheric readings

  • Communicate test results and implement safety controls

  • Apply emergency procedures when unsafe gas levels are detected

  • Workers entering or working in confined spaces, tanks, pits, or tunnels

  • Safety officers, supervisors, and standby personnel

  • Emergency response teams or maintenance staff conducting gas testing

  • Anyone needing to meet WHS or site-specific safety compliance requirements

How the Training Works

Training Delivery

  • Delivered in person by a qualified trainer at one of Maxwell Training’s purpose-built simulators or an approved training facility

  • The total course duration includes practical activities and assessments

  • Training combines classroom learning with hands-on use of gas detectors and confined space simulation equipment

Practical Activities

  • Inspecting and preparing gas detection equipment

  • Conducting pre-entry and continuous atmospheric testing

  • Testing for oxygen, flammable gases, and toxic vapours

  • Recording and interpreting readings in line with workplace procedures

  • Applying control measures when unsafe conditions are detected

  • Performing post-testing maintenance and storage of equipment

Assessment

  • Knowledge assessment (multiple choice and short answer)

  • Practical demonstration of gas testing and correct equipment use

  • Completion of a Portfolio of Evidence including workplace documents such as equipment inspection checklists

Entry Requirements

To fully participate and stay safe during practical activities, you must meet the following requirements:

General Requirements

  • Proof of identity must be supplied and verified on the day of training

  • Minimum age of 14 years

  • Students under 18 years must provide parental consent (unless linked to an employer)

  • You need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) — apply free at www.usi.gov.au

Language, Literacy, Numeracy & Digital (LLND)

  • Read and complete knowledge questions (basic Year 10 level literacy)

  • Read and interpret safety data sheets (SDS) and gas detector manuals

  • Complete documentation such as test records and risk assessments

  • Read and interpret gas test monitor results

  • Use a digital device (tablet, smartphone, or laptop) for assessments

Physical Requirements

  • Be physically capable of using gas detection equipment and participating in simulated confined space scenarios safely
