Work Safely at Heights
Working at heights is one of the leading causes of workplace injuries in Australia. This nationally accredited course gives you the hands-on skills and knowledge to identify risks, use fall protection equipment correctly, and follow safe systems of work when operating at any height where there’s a risk of falling.Through a combination of practical exercises and engaging demonstrations, you’ll learn how to inspect equipment, secure work areas, and perform tasks safely — protecting yourself and your team.
Accredited Unit of Competency

What You’ll Learn
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:- Confidently and safely work at heights
- Identify potential height-related hazards and assess risk controls
- Inspect, fit, and use fall-arrest and restraint systems correctly
- Select and maintain harnesses, anchor points, and lifelines
- Understand the hierarchy of control when working at heights
- Follow safe work procedures and emergency protocols
- Comply with WHS legislation, Codes of Practice, and workplace policies
Who Is This Course For
This course is ideal for anyone working at heights, including:- Construction and maintenance workers
- Roofers, electricians, painters, riggers, and scaffolders
- Civil, mining, and telecommunications personnel
- Supervisors or safety officers responsible for overseeing work at height
- Contractors who need to meet workplace safety compliance requirements
How the Training Works
Training Delivery
- Delivered in person by a qualified trainer at one of Maxwell Training’s purpose-built simulators or an approved training facility
- The total course duration includes practical activities and assessments
- Learners will take part in demonstrations, group discussions, and realistic simulations using height safety systems and PPE
Practical Activities Include
- Conducting a pre-start safety inspection of height safety gear and the worksite
- Setting up and using fall-prevention and arrest systems
- Performing safe ascent and descent techniques
- Applying a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) to a practical scenario
- Responding to simulated fall incidents and emergency procedures
Assessment
- Knowledge assessment (multiple choice and short answer)
- Completion of a Portfolio of Evidence including workplace documents such as a SWMS, Take 5, and equipment inspection checklists
- Practical demonstration of correct harness use, anchor point setup, implementation of risk control measures, and safe ascent/descent with 100% hook-up
Entry Requirements
To fully participate and stay safe during practical activities, you must meet the following requirements:General Requirements
- Proof of identity must be supplied and verified on the day of training
- Minimum age of 14 years
- Students under 18 years must provide parental consent (unless linked to an employer)
- You need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) — apply free at www.usi.gov.au
Language, Literacy, Numeracy & Digital (LLND)
- Read and complete knowledge questions (basic Year 10 level literacy)
- Read and interpret safety signs, procedures, and manufacturer instructions
- Complete documentation such as equipment inspection checklists and SWMS
- Follow verbal and written instructions from the trainer
- Use a digital device (tablet, smartphone, or laptop) for assessments
Physical Requirements
- Wearing a safety harness
- Performing basic physical movements such as ascending and descending ladders
- Working safely at heights
