This nationally accredited course provides workers with the essential knowledge and skills to identify, assess, and control the risks associated with crystalline silica exposure in the workplace.

HOW THE TRAINING WORKS
Training Delivery
  • Delivered in real-time using a secure virtual classroom platform (Microsoft Teams)
  • Total course duration is 4 hours (consistent with face-to-face delivery)
  • Learners will participate in discussions, view presentations, and interact directly with the trainer throughout the session
Practical Activities Include
  • You will participate in virtual demonstrations and guided practical tasks, such as:
    • Identifying silica-containing products via images or video samples
    • Reviewing and discussing Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
    • Exploring and applying risk control strategies using real-world case studies
  • You will prepare a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) or silica risk control plan
  • Trainers will provide interactive instruction on the correct use of dust control tools, PPE, and engineering controls using visual aids and examples
Assessment
You’ll complete:
  • Theory assessment (multiple choice and short answer questions)
  • Practical identification tasks using secure digital materials (e.g. photos of silica samples, dust control equipment)
  • Case study-based risk control plans or SWMS creation

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
To fully participate during practical activities and online learning, students should meet the following:

General Requirements
  • Students must be located at least 100km from the nearest face-to-face delivery location to be eligible for this delivery mode
  • Proof of identity must be supplied by you via our Onboarding Form and original copies must be verified on the day of training
  • You must be at least 14 years of age to participate in the training
  • Students under 18 years of age must supply parental consent (unless you are linked to an employer)
  • You need a Unique Student Identifier (USI). If you do not have one, you can apply for it for free at www.usi.gov.au
  • Access to a reliable internet connection and a device (computer, tablet or laptop) with a webcam, microphone, and speakers
  • Ability to access and use Microsoft teams or Zoom meetings
  • A quiet, distraction-free environment suitable for participating in a live online training session

Language, Literacy, Numeracy & Digital (LLND)
  • Reading and completing knowledge questions (basic reading and writing at Year 10 level)
  • Read and interpret safety data sheets, legislation, and workplace procedures
  • Complete documentation such as control plans and hazard reports
  • Confidently navigate online learning environments with minimal assistance

Physical Requirements
  • Have the capacity to engage with online presentations, videos, and group discussions for an extended period of time
