Elevating Work Platform Training - Scissor Lift
Operating an elevating work platform (EWP) under 11 metres or a scissor lift still presents real workplace risks and requires the right skills to perform safely. This nationally recognised course gives you the practical knowledge and hands-on experience to operate EWPs safely in a range of workplace environments.Delivered in a one-day, practical format, this course focuses on safe operation, hazard awareness, and correct use of equipment — helping you build confidence and capability at work.
Important: This course DOES NOT provide a High-Risk Work Licence (HRWL). It is designed for workplace competency and compliance. If you require a licence for boom-type EWPs over 11 metres, please refer to our Licence to Operate a Boom-Type Elevating Work Platform (11 metres or more) course.

What You’ll Learn
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:- Plan and prepare for EWP operations safely
- Plan and prepare for EWP operations safely
- Conduct pre-start and post-start inspections, including logbooks and safety checks
- Identify hazards and apply effective risk controls (Take 5, exclusion zones, traffic management)
- Interpret load charts and Safe Working Load (SWL)
- Perform basic calculations to confirm loads are within limits
- Safely set up and operate an EWP or scissor lift
- Use fall protection equipment, including harnesses and anchor points
- Work safely around powerlines, structures, and other workers
- Communicate effectively using hand signals and radios
- Shut down, secure and report faults correctly
Who Is This Course For
This course is ideal for:- Workers required to operate EWPs under 11 metres or scissor lifts
- Tradespeople, warehouse workers and maintenance personnel
- Employers wanting to upskill staff for safe plant operation
- Workers needing proof of competency (not a HRWL)
How the Training Works
Training Delivery- Training is delivered in person by a qualified trainer at one of Maxwell Training’s facilities, or at your site pending a suitability inspection
- Duration: 1 day (7.5 hours)
- Includes classroom learning, practical workshop activities and real-world scenarios
You will take part in realistic, hands-on activities including:
- Conducting pre-start inspections and logbook checks
- Completing Take 5 risk assessments
- Performing load chart interpretation and calculations
- Carrying out harness inspections
- Setting up safe work areas with barriers and exclusion zones
- Operating an EWP and scissor lift
- Managing hazards such as ground conditions, weather, and nearby workers
Your competency will be assessed through:
- Knowledge assessment (multiple choice and short answer)
- Portfolio of Evidence
- Practical observation assessments
Entry Requirements
To fully participate and stay safe during practical activities, you must meet the following requirements:General Requirements
- Must be 18 years or older
- Proof of identity must be supplied and verified on the day of training and assessment
- You need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) — apply free at www.usi.gov.au
You will need basic skills to:
- Read and complete knowledge questions (basic Year 10 level literacy)
- Read and interpret safety procedures, signage and load charts
- Complete logbooks, Take 5 forms and assessments
- Perform basic calculations (platform load and SWL)
- Follow verbal and written instructions from the trainer
- Use a digital device (tablet, smartphone, or laptop) for assessments
To safely participate, you must be able to:
- Climb on and off the EWP using three points of contact
- Work safely at height for short periods
- Wear and use a safety harness and PPE
- Operate controls while maintaining balance and awareness
- Maintain alertness and coordination during operation
