Elevating Work Platform Training (Under 11m, Over 11m & Scissor Lift)
Operate with confidence across a variety of EWP types. This combined course gives you the skills, knowledge, and certification to safely operate boom-type elevating work platforms (over 11 metres), EWPs under 11 metres, and scissor lifts in real workplace environments.Delivered in a structured, hands-on format, this course combines practical training, real-world scenarios, and SafeWork NSW-aligned assessment — preparing you for both workplace competency and your High Risk Work Licence (WP class).
Unlike standalone EWP courses, this program delivers two nationally recognised units of competency and the pathway to your HRWL — making it ideal for workers and employers looking for complete capability across all EWP types.
Accredited Unit of Competency
On successful completion, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for:
- TLILIC0005 Licence to operate a boom-type elevating work platform (boom length 11 metres or more)
- RIIHAN301E Operate elevating work platform
- Nil
- This course leads to a SafeWork NSW High Risk Work Licence (WP class)
- You must be 18 years or older and provide valid ID to be assessed
- Formal assessment is conducted by a SafeWork NSW accredited assessor
- A fee will apply to obtain your licence from SafeWork NSW upon successful completion
What You’ll Learn
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:- Plan and prepare for EWP operations safely
- Conduct pre-start and post-start inspections, including logbooks and harness checks
- Identify hazards and apply effective risk controls (Take 5, exclusion zones, traffic management)
- Interpret EWP load charts, working envelopes and rated capacity (SWL)
- Calculate total platform loads (people, tools and equipment)
- Safely set up and operate an EWP at height
- Work safely around powerlines, structures, and other workers
- Use fall protection equipment, including harnesses and anchor points
- Communicate effectively using hand signals, radios and workplace procedures
- Respond to emergencies, including controlled descent and rescue procedures
- Follow WHS legislation, Codes of Practice, and workplace procedures

How the Training Works
Training Delivery- Training is delivered in person by a qualified trainer at one of Maxwell Training’s facilities, or at your site pending a suitability inspection
- Maximum class size: 8 participants
- Duration: 3 days (7.5 hours per day)
- Structured as a combined (clustered) program covering both units
- Includes classroom learning, practical workshop activities and real-world scenarios
- Final assessment (Day 3) is conducted by a SafeWork NSW accredited HRW assessor
You will take part in realistic, hands-on activities including:
- Completing EWP pre-start and post-start inspections
- Conducting harness inspections and safety checks
- Interpreting load charts and working envelopes
- Calculating Safe Working Load (SWL) for tasks
- Completing Take 5 risk assessments
- Setting up exclusion zones and traffic management controls
- Operating:
- Boom lifts (over and under 11m)
- Scissor lifts
- Managing hazards such as wind, ground conditions, powerlines and nearby workers
- Practising emergency procedures including controlled descent
Your competency will be assessed through:
- Knowledge assessment (multiple choice and short answer)
- Portfolio of Evidence
- Practical observation assessments
- SafeWork NSW HRW assessment (theory practical)
Entry Requirements
To fully participate and stay safe during practical activities, you must meet the following requirements:General Requirements
- Must be 18 years or older
- Proof of identity must be supplied and verified on the day of training and assessment
- You need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) — apply free at www.usi.gov.au
To complete your licence assessment, you must:
- APPLY ONLINE for an Assessment Enrolment Number (AEN)
- Complete your digital ID check (2 FORMS OF ID REQUIRED)
- Receive your AEN via email
- Provide your AEN to your assessor before your assessment
- Your results will be emailed to you after completion
- A $92 licence fee will be required by SafeWork upon successful completion of the HRW assessment
You will need basic skills to:
- Read and complete knowledge questions (basic Year 10 level literacy)
- Read and interpret safety procedures, signage and load charts
- Complete logbooks, Take 5 forms and assessments
- Perform basic calculations (platform load and SWL)
- Follow verbal and written instructions from the trainer
- Use a digital device (tablet, smartphone, or laptop) for assessments
To safely participate, you must be able to:
- Climb on and off the EWP using three points of contact
- Work safely at height for extended periods
- Wear and use a safety harness and PPE
- Operate controls while maintaining balance and awareness
- Respond to changing site conditions and hazards
- Maintain alertness and coordination during operation
