This advanced 3-day Confined Space Rescue course equips participants with the specialist skills needed to perform rescues in confined spaces and operate breathing apparatus (BA) in hazardous environments. It covers emergency preparedness and rescues ideal for employers needing compliant teams and individuals ready to step up in an emergency.

Confined Space Rescue Training

This nationally recognised 3-day course will equip you with the skills and knowledge to enter and work in confined spaces, monitor permits, test atmospheres, use breathing apparatus, and perform confined space rescue operations. Delivered through realistic rescue simulations in purpose built confined space training facilities, this course is ideal for anyone required to act as a rescuer, standby person, permit issuer, or emergency response team member. No previous experience is required — all prerequisite units (e.g. hazard analysis and permit work) are delivered within the course.

Accredited Units of Competency

On successful completion, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for the following nationally recognised units:

  • RIIWHS202E Enter and work in confined spaces

  • RIIRIS201E Conduct local risk control

  • MSMPER200 Work in accordance with an issued permit

  • MSMPER300 Issue work permits

  • MSMPER202 Observe permit work

  • MSMPER300 Issue work permits*

  • MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres

  • MSMWHS216 Operate breathing apparatus

  • PUASAR025 Undertake confined space rescue

  • HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

 

Prerequisites

  • MSMWHS201 Conduct hazard analysis is a prerequisite unit for MSMPER300 Issue work permits

What You’ll Learn

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify and control confined space hazards using risk assessments and permits

  • Test and monitor atmospheres for oxygen levels, flammable gases and toxic contaminants

  • Use breathing apparatus (SCBA) safely in hazardous or irrespirable atmospheres

  • Issue, observe and close permit-to-work documentation correctly

  • Perform two confined space entries using harnesses and retrieval systems

  • Plan and execute confined space rescue procedures safely using tripods, davit arms, recovery winches and stretchers

  • Communicate effectively with others

  • Provide CPR and immediate first aid in a confined space incident

How the Training Works

Training Delivery

  • Delivered in person by a qualified trainer at one of Maxwell Training’s purpose-built simulators or an approved training facility

  • The total course duration includes practical activities and assessments

  • Learners will take part in demonstrations, group discussions, and realistic simulations in confined spaces

 

Practical Activities

  • Monitoring workers in a confined space via visual checks, signals and verbal communication

  • Completing the Confined Space Entry Permit, hazard analysis, and risk control documentation

  • Gas testing and atmospheric monitoring using calibrated detectors

  • Gas testing and ventilation of a confined space

  • Completing risk assessments, entry permits, and rescue plans

  • Donning, operating and monitoring breathing apparatus (BA)

  • Using harnesses, tripods, davit arms and retrieval systems

  • Performing rescue of a conscious and unconscious casualty

  • Extraction using basket stretcher and mechanical advantage systems

  • Post-rescue decontamination and incident reporting

 

Assessment

  • Knowledge assessment (multiple choice and short answer)

  • Completion of a Portfolio of Evidence including workplace documents such as a Confined Space Entry Permit, rescue plans, risk assessments and gas detector and breathing apparatus inspection checklists, incident report forms

  • Practical demonstration of selecting and issuing correct permits, monitoring confined space entry and ensuring compliance, gas testing and interpreting results, inspecting and donning breathing apparatus, suspending work or initiating rescue operations

Entry Requirements

To fully participate and stay safe during practical activities, you must meet the following requirements:

General Requirements

  • Proof of identity must be supplied and verified on the day of training

  • Minimum age of 14 years

  • Students under 18 years must provide parental consent (unless linked to an employer)

  • You need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) — apply free at www.usi.gov.au

 

Language, Literacy, Numeracy & Digital (LLND)

  • Read and complete knowledge questions (basic Year 10 level literacy)

  • Read and understand permits, gas test results, safety signs and SWMS

  • Complete written reports such as permits, handover forms, risk assessments, incident report forms

  • Communicate clearly with entrants and supervisors

  • Use a digital device (tablet, smartphone, or laptop) for assessments

 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to remain stationed at an entry point for extended periods

  • Able to wear PPE such as harness and helmet

  • Perform manual handling tasks (lifting stretchers, equipment)

  • Communicate clearly with entrants and supervisors

  • Working in simulated low-visibility, noisy and stressful rescue scenarios
