First Aid in an ESI Environment
Learn how to respond to an injury or illness in an electricity supply industry (ESI) workplace. This four-hour course focuses on checking the scene for danger, assessing a casualty and giving first aid for conditions such as electrical burns and electric shock. You will practise seeking help, monitoring the casualty and handing over to emergency services. Employers can use this course to build first aid capability in teams working around electrical infrastructure.Accredited Unit of Competency
On successful completion, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for:
- UETDRMP010 Provide first aid in an ESI environment
- HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation must be completed before this unit.
What You’ll Learn
By the end of this course, you will be able to:- Check an ESI incident scene for danger to yourself, the casualty and others
- Access first aid equipment, seek help and contact emergency services
- Assess a casualty and provide an initial first aid response
- Respond to electrical burns and recognise how to manage electric shock
- Recognise first aid needs involving bleeding, medical shock, bites and stings
- Monitor the casualty and hand over clear information to emergency services
- Secure the incident area and report the incident under workplace procedures

How the Training Works
Training Delivery- Delivered face to face by a qualified trainer at our Maxwell Training facility or an approved training venue
- Four hours, including a short break, practical activities and assessment
- Learn through trainer demonstrations, discussion and realistic ESI first aid scenarios
- Checking an ESI incident scene for hazards before approaching a casualty
- Assessing a casualty and using available first aid equipment
- Responding to simulated electrical burns and electric shock
- Seeking help, contacting emergency services and monitoring the casualty
- Securing the area, handing over information and completing an incident report
- Knowledge questions about ESI first aid procedures and common injuries
- Practical first aid scenario assessments, including electrical burns and electric shock
- Communication, casualty monitoring and incident reporting during a simulated response
Entry Requirements
To take part in training and assessment, you will need to meet these requirements:General Requirements
- Provide proof of identity on the day of training
- Hold HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation before undertaking UETDRMP010
- You need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) — apply free at www.usi.gov.au
- Minimum age of 14 years; students under 18 need parental consent unless linked to an employer
- Read straightforward first aid instructions and workplace procedures
- Understand the trainer’s instructions and communicate clearly during a scenario
- Complete short knowledge answers and an incident report
- Follow written and spoken safety directions
- Use a tablet, smartphone or computer for online assessment tasks, with support available if needed
- Move safely in a simulated incident area and use first aid equipment
- Demonstrate first aid actions for a casualty in practical scenarios
