Identify, Locate and Protect Underground Services
Before ground is disturbed, you need to know what services may be below it and how to work safely around them. Plans are a starting point, but underground electricity, gas, water, sewer and telecommunications services may not be exactly where you expect.This nationally recognised course will develop your skills to read service plans and asset owner information, recognise clues on site, and use locating equipment to identify and mark underground services. You’ll practise checking equipment, assessing risks and recording what you find. You’ll also learn how to protect services during nearby work and what to do if you uncover an unexpected asset.

What You’ll Learn
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:- Plan underground service locating work and confirm work requirements
- Interpret service plans, Before You Dig Australia information and asset owner requirements
- Identify site indicators, hazards and environmental issues, and apply controls
- Check and use suitable underground service locating equipment
- Locate, identify, mark and record underground services
- Determine how services will be protected during nearby work
- Follow workplace procedures for unexpected services, damage, reporting and site clean-up
Who Is This Course For?
This course is designed for people who need to identify and work near underground services, including:- Civil construction and excavation workers
- Plant operators and ground crews involved in ground works
- Utilities, telecommunications and infrastructure workers
- Supervisors coordinating work near underground assets
- Contractors undertaking installation, maintenance or repair work where buried services may be present
How the Training Works
Training Delivery- Delivered in person by a qualified trainer at Maxwell Training, an approved training site or suitable workplace location
- The course includes guided learning, practical activities and assessment
- Learners will work with service plans, site documentation, PPE and underground locating equipment
- Reviewing service plans and identifying underground assets and site indicators
- Inspecting PPE and locating equipment before use
- Walking the site and using an electronic locator to identify and mark services
- Applying a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) and Take 5 to the activity
- Recording asset location information and responding to an unexpected service or damage scenario
- Knowledge assessment with multiple choice questions
- Portfolio activities including service plan reading, an underground asset location record, PPE inspection, a Take 5 and a SWMS
- Practical observation of site checks, equipment use, locating and marking services, risk controls and completion of the work area
Entry Requirements
To participate in the practical activities, you must meet the following requirements:General Requirements
- Proof of identity must be supplied and verified on the day of training
- Minimum age of 14 years
- Students under 18 years must provide parental consent (unless linked to an employer)
- You need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) — apply free at www.usi.gov.au
- Read and answer knowledge questions
- Read and interpret service plans, safety information and work instructions
- Complete records such as a location form, equipment checks, a Take 5 and a SWMS
- Follow verbal and written instructions from the trainer
- Use a digital device (tablet, smartphone, or laptop) for assessments, with support available if needed
- Walk over and inspect the practical work area
- Handle and operate locating equipment and perform basic equipment checks
- Bend or kneel as needed to inspect ground markings and site features safely
