Confined Space Rescue Training
This nationally recognised 3-day course will equip you with the skills and knowledge to enter and work in confined spaces, monitor permits, test atmospheres, use breathing apparatus, and perform confined space rescue operations. Delivered through realistic rescue simulations in purpose built confined space training facilities, this course is ideal for anyone required to act as a rescuer, standby person, permit issuer, or emergency response team member. No previous experience is required — all prerequisite units (e.g. hazard analysis and permit work) are delivered within the course.
Accredited Units of Competency
On successful completion, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for the following nationally recognised units:
RIIWHS202E Enter and work in confined spaces
RIIRIS201E Conduct local risk control
MSMPER200 Work in accordance with an issued permit
MSMPER300 Issue work permits
MSMPER202 Observe permit work
MSMPER300 Issue work permits*
MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres
MSMWHS216 Operate breathing apparatus
PUASAR025 Undertake confined space rescue
HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
Prerequisites
MSMWHS201 Conduct hazard analysis is a prerequisite unit for MSMPER300 Issue work permits
What You’ll Learn
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
Identify and control confined space hazards using risk assessments and permits
Test and monitor atmospheres for oxygen levels, flammable gases and toxic contaminants
Use breathing apparatus (SCBA) safely in hazardous or irrespirable atmospheres
Issue, observe and close permit-to-work documentation correctly
Perform two confined space entries using harnesses and retrieval systems
Plan and execute confined space rescue procedures safely using tripods, davit arms, recovery winches and stretchers
Communicate effectively with others
Provide CPR and immediate first aid in a confined space incident
Who Is This Course For?
This course is ideal for:
Emergency Response Teams and Confined Space Rescue Personnel
Standby workers looking to upskill to rescue level
Shutdown, mining, utility, water, council, manufacturing and defence workers
Employers who need compliant rescue-trained personnel on site
How the Training Works
Training Delivery
Delivered in person by a qualified trainer at one of Maxwell Training’s purpose-built simulators or an approved training facility
The total course duration includes practical activities and assessments
Learners will take part in demonstrations, group discussions, and realistic simulations in confined spaces
Practical Activities
Monitoring workers in a confined space via visual checks, signals and verbal communication
Completing the Confined Space Entry Permit, hazard analysis, and risk control documentation
Gas testing and atmospheric monitoring using calibrated detectors
Gas testing and ventilation of a confined space
Completing risk assessments, entry permits, and rescue plans
Donning, operating and monitoring breathing apparatus (BA)
Using harnesses, tripods, davit arms and retrieval systems
Performing rescue of a conscious and unconscious casualty
Extraction using basket stretcher and mechanical advantage systems
Post-rescue decontamination and incident reporting
Assessment
Knowledge assessment (multiple choice and short answer)
Completion of a Portfolio of Evidence including workplace documents such as a Confined Space Entry Permit, rescue plans, risk assessments and gas detector and breathing apparatus inspection checklists, incident report forms
Practical demonstration of selecting and issuing correct permits, monitoring confined space entry and ensuring compliance, gas testing and interpreting results, inspecting and donning breathing apparatus, suspending work or initiating rescue operations
